Using time usfully:

Objective :

To stimulate thinking about how we use time, and how we waste time.

Silent sitting:

Asseyez-vous confortablement, vous n’avez pas de contact avec vos voisins –
le dos bien droit – les mains sur les cuisses – tournées vers le haut, comme des petites coupelles – voilà, c’est cela —
et maintenant -- vous imaginez tout autour de vous, une grosse boule de lumière dorée qui vous entoure et vous protège – elle représente votre espace, dans lequel personne n’a le droit de pénétrer –

Comme vous vous sentez en sécurité à l’intérieur de cette boule, vous respirez calmement –
A l’inspiration, vous sentez l’air entrer dans vos poumons--
A la pause, vous sentez l’air qui se répand dans votre ventre, vos bras, vos jambes et toute votre tête —
A l’expiration, laissez ressortir l’air de vos poumons et vous recommencez —
Vous sentez l’air entrer -- se répartir dans tout votre corps –
les muscles de vos jambes et de vos bras se relâchent, se relaxent – puis, vous laissez ressortir l’air de votre poitrine – faîtes cela plusieurs fois –

Lorsque vous inspirez, sentez aussi la lumière dorée qui entre dans vos poumons et qui vient éclairer toutes les parties de votre corps.

Cette belle lumière dorée, vous fait découvrir les zones d’ombres qui se trouvent dans votre corps, votre tête, votre cœur, votre esprit –Ces zones d’ombres représentent vos douleurs, vos malaises, vos peurs, vos colères, vos déceptions, vos tristesses, vos rancunes, votre jalousie, tout ce qui vous perturbe, vous dérange.
C’est comme avec le soleil, là où il brille, l’ombre disparaît.
Aussi, peu à peu -- sentez -- grâce à l’Amour qu’apporte la lumière dorée, --
sentez que peu à peu, vos zones d’ombre disparaissent ,-- à l’intérieur de vous, tout devient lumineux, calme, tranquille – lumineux, calme, tranquille –
Maintenant, toujours derrière vos yeux clos, à côté de vous se trouve l’escalier qui vous permet de descendre -- dans la salle où se trouvent -- les coffres des Valeurs Humaines :-- Le jaune de la Vérité -- le bleu de l’Action-Juste -- le vert de la Paix -- le rouge de l’Amour et-- l’orange de la Non-Violence.
Vous vous dirigez vers le coffre de l’Action-Juste et vous soulevez le couvercle.
Dedans – vous voyez plein de jolies perles bleues qui scintillent – vous prenez celle qui est aplatie comme une montre avec ses aiguilles c’est la perle du temps -- vous l’ouvrez et dedans vous découvrez deux images : la première c’est celle d’un bouton de rose fané, la rose n’a pas pu éclore pour nous faire profiter de sa beauté et de son parfum elle représente le temps perdu. L’autre image représente une magnifique boule de cristal qui brille et en tournant réfléchit les rayons du soleil – admirez-la cette boule-, elle symbolise la bonne utilisation du temps. Souvenez-vous de ces images, --faites votre choix --: être comme le bouton de rose—ou -- être comme cette belle boule de cristal qui brille,même si cela vous demande parfois de faire des efforts.

IDLE GEORGE

There was once a man named George who loved nothing better than idling his time away, playing cards and gambling with anyone he could find to play with, often late into the night. He rarely found time to take his children out and this made them sad. He never had time to do much work, and this put a burden on his wife, who had to work harder than she might otherwise have done.

One day he decided to go down to the river to fish. He had thought of a way to catch enough fish to last the family for a week, so that he could have the rest of the week to himself. After stretching his nets right across the stream from one bank to the other, he tied a stone to a cord and beat the water with it to make the startled fish swim into the meshes without looking where they were going.

One of the other villagers called Mary, who had come down to collect some water, saw what he was doing and pointed out to him that the mud was ruining the clear drinking water.

“But I’ve got to get enough fish to feed the family,” said George. “And this is the only way to do it quickly.”
“So you may think,” said Mary. “But if you lead your life upside down, George, one trouble will follow another. Plan your life a bit better. You will still have time for enjoyment. If you get up early in the mornings and tend your vegetables and look after your fruit trees, you’ll have enough to eat, without having to torment poor fish and making the river water undrinkable into the bargain.” She paused, smiling sympathetically.

you won’t be able to get up, George, if you’re up half the night playing cards. And then your family and the rest of the village have to suffer. Come, George, leave the water alone. We can give you a little something to tide you over, but you will need to do some work yourself in the mornings as well.”

Extension exercise/Links to Other Subjects:

Maths link: For a day, the children can record how much time they spend on each activity e.g. sleeping, brushing hair, getting ready, at school, watching TV, etc.
The results can be tabulated into either a bar graph (for comparative study) or individual pie diagrams. To enhance ITC skills the information can also be fed into a computer programme. The children may then choose to design their own ideal day, where they allocate time to each activity and avoid wasting time.
