Les grand-mères vues par les enfants

Site « Amour de lumière »

* Une grand-mère est une femme qui n'a pas d'enfant à elle, c'est pour ça qu'elle aime les enfants des autres.

* Les grand-mères n'ont rien à faire, elles n'ont qu'à être là.

* Quand elles nous emmènent en promenade, elles marchent lentement, à coté des belles feuilles et des chenilles. Elles ne disent jamais : « Avance plus vite, dépêche-toi ! »

* En général, elles sont grosses, mais pas trop, pour pouvoir attacher nos souliers.

* Elles savent qu'on a toujours besoin d'un deuxième morceau de gâteau, ou du plus gros.

* Une vraie grand-mère ne tape jamais un enfant, elle se met en colère en riant.

* Les grand-mères portent des lunettes, et parfois, elles peuvent même enlever leurs dents.

* Elles savent être sourdes quand il faut, pour ne pas nous gêner quand nous sommes maladroits.

* Quand elles nous lisent des histoires, elles ne sautent jamais un bout, et elles n'ont rien contre si on réclame la même histoire plusieurs fois.

* Les grand-mères sont les seuls adultes qui ont toujours du temps.

* Elles savent faire le geste qui fait du bien quand on a mal.

* Les grand-mères ne sont pas aussi fragiles qu'elles le disent, même si elles meurent plus souvent que nous.

* Tout le monde devrait essayer d'avoir une grand-mère, surtout ceux qui n'ont pas la télé.

Le cadeau de Grand-mère

D. Trinidad Hunt

Laissez l'eau chauffer doucement.

THE BEGGING BOWL

From “Sunrays for Thursday” by Prya et Sanjay Tandon

A beggar knocked at the court of a king for alms. The king saw the ragged clothes of the beggar and his skinny face and limbs. His eyes seemed to look nowhere. He ordered that precious jewels and gold be put into the begging bowl of the beggar. The beggar held out his bowl and the king’s men poured gold coins, rubies and emeralds into it. The bowl became half full. The king said, “Fill up the bowl; give him more.” So some more jewels were poured into the begging bowl. But it remained half full. The king motioned for more to be given. The queen got up from her throne and removed a priceless necklace from her neck and put it into the beggar’s bowl. But the bowl was still, only half full.

Everyone was perplexed. One Minister advised that the man was hungry, “Let him be given food,” he said. The huge bag of grains was poured into the begging bowl. Strangely, by the end of it, the bowl was yet only half full. The beggar stood there, not batting an eyelid! The king ordered for clothes to be given to the beggar. But the bowl just did not fill up.

Just then a poor old woman happened to pass by the King’s court and stopped to see the drama. She looked at the beggar and her eyes widened. She ran as quickly as her feet could carry her and held the beggar in her arms. “Oh! My dearest son! My precious child! Where have you been? I have been searching for you for months. Oh! I am thankful to God that I have found you at last.” The old woman, rained kisses on the beggar’s forehead and stroked his untidy, matted hair. She addressed the king and said, “My Lord, this is my son. He lost his memory.  Now, I have found him; please allow me to take him home.” Tears of joy streamed down her wrinkled cheeks as she hugged the beggar to her bosom.

The king’s minister glanced towards the begging bowl. It was full! He couldn’t believe his eyes. Nothing; apparently nothing had been added into it. But the bowl was not only full, it was overflowing!

A voice seemed to come from nowhere and yet from everywhere. It said, “The begging bowl is no ordinary bowl. It is made of the human heart. Know ye man! No amount of jewels, gold, grains or finery can ever fill it. It can be filled by only one thing. And that is LOVE!

THE FORTUNE IN THE WELL

From “Sunrays for Thursday” by Prya et Sanjay Tandon

A man inherited a fortune from his uncle. He brought home a large amount of money and gold. That evening he was sitting in his backyard when he thought he heard someone whispering. He strained his ears to catch the muffled words and heard, “jewellery at midnight hide quietly”

The man smelt a rat and immediately called out to his wife, “Listen my dear, I am anxious for the safety of our large inheritance, I think we should put it in a trunk and hide it in this well in our backyard.” The wife raised her eyebrows, surprised that her husband should be saying this to her so audibly.  But he signalled to her to keep mum and follow him into the house.

Soon the couple came out of the house lugging a large and heavy iron chest. A padlock was dangling over the bolt. They dragged the chest to the well and somehow managed to throw it down the well. It hit the bottom of the well with a big splash. The man heaved a sigh of relief and said, “At last, now we can sleep in peace. Come let us go indoors.”

The burglars were watching every move intently. They were thrilled that they would not have to go through the risky exercise of breaking into the house. Retrieving the chest from the well they thought, would be child’s play. They were pleased to find a bucket lying near the well, complete with a rope. They stealthily lowered the bucket into the well and drew out a bucket full of water. The head burglar said tersely, “Fast, we must draw out all the water, bucket by bucket. Soon we’ll be able to dry up the well. Then we can go down the well and get the treasure from the chest. This rope should be strong enough for us to climb up again. I can see that it is securely fastened to that tree.”
The burglars emptied out the water from the well as fast as they could. As the water started flowing away from the site of the well, in the darkness of the night, the owner of the house smartly channeled it, to water his crop of rice in the adjoining field! Soon the owner felt that the flow of water was dwindling. He realized that the thieves had probably emptied out most of the water from the well.

He noticed that one by one all the robbers were lowering themselves into the well. The owner crept up to the tree and undid the knot of the rope!

A few minutes later he heard a commotion from the depths of the well. “What is this? This chest is full of old utensils and stones!” “Oh Lord! Where are the gold coins?” “Let me see” After realizing that they had been duped, the head burglar caught hold of the rope and said, “I think we must rush out now. We have been fooled!” As soon as he tugged at the rope to pull himself up, the rope came tumbling down on his head. “We have been fooled twice over!” he wailed.

The owner had saved his fortune by his sheer presence of mind. If one is able to do the right thing at the right time that makes all the difference!

Common sense is seldom common. History tells us that when NASA started the launch of astronauts into space it found that pens wouldn’t work at zero gravity because the ink wouldn’t flow. NASA spent an exorbitant sum of money, over a period of a decade, to develop a pen that would work at any kind of gravity, temperature, pressure etc. The Russians simply used a pencil!

The difference lies in how you approach the problem. Wisdom is nothing more than timely application of common sense.

 KRACK-TRACK-KRACK-TRACK

From “Sunrays for Thursday” by Prya et Sanjay Tandon

In a village there was a well, where the water was drawn by a bull that was tied to a huge iron wheel. As the bull would run on a circular path around the well, the wheel would move and water would be drawn up. Throughout the period when the bull was at work and the water was flowing out, there was a krack-track- krack-track noise coming from the rickety old wheel.

Some women filled water in pots to carry home for kitchen use. There were others who sat nearby, washing clothes. Everything seemed to be going on in perfect harmony to the music of Krack-track-krack-track playing in the background. A king came galloping by that way. His horse was thirsty. He called out to a villager who was sitting close by. “My horse is thirsty. I need some water.” The peasant nudged the bull and as the bull started moving on its circular track, the water started flowing along with the sound of krack-track- krack-track. The peasant said, “The water is flowing now, come bring your horse this way and let it quench its thirst.”

The king led the horse to the stream of water, but the horse shied away due to the cracking sound. The king tried a couple of times, but it seemed that the horse was scared of the sound. The king said, “Stop that noise, my horse is scared of it.” The peasant said, “If I have to stop that noise, I will have to stop the bull, the noise shall stop but so shall the flow of water. If the horse wants to have the water, it shall have to have it along with the noise. There is nothing I can do to give you water without the noise!”

So, the horse after much coaxing had to brave the situation and have the water along with the tune of krack-track-krack-track.

Are we also behaving like the horse? Are we also offering excuses for not doing this or that? Are we waiting for a phase of life to get over before we start doing certain things? Are we waiting for our children to get married, before we start helping out in society? Are we waiting for the children’s exams to get over before we start going for a walk? Are we waiting to earn a certain amount, before we start donating for the lesser fortunate?

Time and tide waits for no one. If you really want to do something, start doing it now.
Do it while you can, for who knows whether you may be able to do it later or not.

THE OLD PHONE --

When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember the polished, old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talked to it.

Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person. Her name was "Information Please" and there was nothing she did not know. Information Please could supply anyone's number and the correct time.

My personal experience with the genie-in-a-bottle came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbour. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I whacked my finger with a hammer, the pain was terrible, but there seemed no point in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy...

I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway. The telephone! Quickly, I ran for the footstool in the parlour and dragged it to the landing. Climbing up, I unhooked the receiver in the parlour and held it to my ear. "Information, please" I said into the mouthpiece just above my head.

A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear.
"Information."

"I hurt my finger..." I wailed into the phone, the tears came readily enough now that I had an audience.
"Isn't your mother home?" came the question.
"Nobody's home but me," I blubbered.
"Are you bleeding?" the voice asked.

"No," I replied. "I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts."

"Can you open the icebox?" she asked.
 I said I could.

"Then chip off a little bit of ice and hold it to your finger," said the voice.

After that, I called "Information Please" for everything. I asked her for help with my geography, and she told me where Philadelphia was. She helped me with my math. She told me my pet chipmunk that I had caught in the park just the day before, would eat fruit and nuts.
Then, there was the time Petey, our pet canary, died. I called, Information Please," and told her the sad story. She listened, and then said things grown-ups say to soothe a child. But I was not consoled. I asked her, "Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?"

She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, "Wayne always remember that there are other worlds to sing in."
 Somehow I felt better.

Another day I was on the telephone, "Information Please."
"Information," said in the now familiar voice. "How do I spell fix?" I asked.

All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. When I was nine years old, we moved across the country to Boston. I missed my friend very much. "Information Please" belonged in that old wooden box back home and I somehow never thought of trying the shiny new phone that sat on the table in the hall. As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me.
Often, in moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy.

A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane put down in Seattle. I had about a half-hour or so between planes. I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now. Then without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown Operator and said, "Information Please."

Miraculously, I heard the small, clear voice I knew so well. "Information."
I hadn't planned this, but I heard myself saying, "Could you please tell me how to spell fix?"

There was a long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, "I guess your finger must have healed by now."
I laughed, "So it's really you," I said. "I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time?"

I wonder," she said, "if you know how much your call meant to me. I never had any children and I used to look forward to your calls."
I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister.
"Please do", she said. "Just ask for Sally."

Three months later I was back in Seattle. A different voice answered "Information." I asked for Sally.
"Are you a friend?" she said.
"Yes, a very old friend," I answered.
"I'm sorry to have to tell you this," she said. "Sally had been working part-time the last few years because she was sick. She died five weeks ago."

Before I could hang up she said, "Wait a minute, did you say your name was Wayne?" "Yes." I answered.
"Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case you called.
Let me read it to you." The note said, "Tell him there are other worlds to sing in.
He'll know what I mean."

I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant.

Never underestimate the impression you may make on others.  Whose life have you touched today? Lifting you on eagle's wings. May you find the joy and peace you long for.

Life is a journey ... NOT a guided tour.
So don't miss the ride and have a great time going around you don't get a second shot at it.

He bien !

Thought for the day

ycoeur17.gif
