MARCH

01/03:
The scriptures have declared that birth as a human is a rare privilige. Man is the foremost among all living beings in creation. In spite of being endowed with superior faculties and capabilities, if man lacks wisdom he is no better than an animal. It is jnana that distinguishes man from animals. In spite of possessing a human body, with its sacred capacities, man pursues wrong paths and indulges in misdeeds, thereby degrading his precious heritage. One who ought to dedicate himself to the pursuit of the Divine and experience bliss, reduces himself a slave to his senses and wastes his life in the pursuit of the ephemeral. It is this preoccupation with the mundane that is at the root of all the insecurity and unhappiness experienced by man.

02/03 :
One may say, "I am striving to control the mind but it runs about like a mad dog. How am I to succeed?" Therein lies a mistake. The mind is intangible, but, it is attached to the senses. Hence, control the senses; let them not draw you into the objective world. By this means, the mind can be made an instrument of illumination and not of delusion. The truth will then dawn that this individual soul is God. The splendour of this awareness will drive away the darkness of ignorance, for, the Self is light and there can be no darkness of ignorance where there is light.

03/03 :
The happiness derived from sensory objects arises and vanishes with time. For instance, when hunger is appeased, there is happiness for that moment; but this happiness ebbs away after a while. This is true of all objects in the world; the joy derived from them is evanescent. Man, however, is after lasting bliss. He is in fact the embodiment of bliss. Bliss constitutes his very nature and being. Why, then, does he not experience it? This is because, unaware of his true nature, he is obsessed with the external world and fails to experience the bliss within him. He mistakenly imagines that the source of joy lies in the phenomenal world.

04/03 :
Whatever one's religion may be, one should cultivate respect for other faiths. One who does not have such an attitude of tolerance and respect for other religions is not a true follower of his own religion. It is not enough merely to adhere strictly to the practices of one's own religion, one should also try to see the essential unity of all religions. Only then will man be able to experience the oneness of Divinity. Once the Truth of the Indwelling Spirit is recognised, there dawns the awareness that the whole world is one family. One is then filled with Divine Love which becomes the driving force for all of one's actions.

05/03:
Where there is Love, there is Peace. Where there is Peace, there is Truth. Where there is Truth, there is Bliss. Where there is Bliss, there is God. To promote love, the first requisite is faith. It is only when you believe that one is your mother that you develop love towards her. If you do not regard her as your mother, you will not have that love for her. First of all, strengthen your faith. Without faith all kinds of worship and all spiritual disciplines are of no use; they are a waste of time. To begin with, cultivate love. Everything grows out of love. That love will reveal to you your true self. That love will confer bliss on you. Therefore, eschew hatred; develop love.

06/03 :
All religions have taught only what is good for humanity. Religion should be practised with this awareness. If the minds are pure, how can religion be bad? It is a mark of ignorance to consider one religion as superior and another as inferior and develop religious differences on this basis. The teachings of all religions are sacred. The basic doctrines are founded on truth. ‘The truth of the Spirit” is the essence of religions, the message of all the scriptures and the basis of all metaphysics.

07/03 :
When work is undertaken with an egotistic attitude, impelled by selfish motives and inspired by hopes of self-advancement, it feeds greed and pride, envy and hatred. Then, it fastens the bond and fosters the feeling of attachment to more and more profitable works. It promotes ingratitude to those who lent their hands and brains and to UniversalConsciousness who endowed the person with the urge and the skill. "I did it", one says when the work succeeds; or "Others spoiled it" one says when it fails. Resentment, depression and despair follow when the work results in failure. The more deeply one is attached to the fruits, the more intense and painful is one's grief when one is disappointed. The only means, therefore, to escape from both pride and pain is to leave the result to the Will of Universal Consciousness, while one is happy in the thought that one has done one's duty with all the dedication and care that one is capable of.

08/03 :
It is only when attachment to the fruits of one's actions is discarded that the action becomes yoga (a means to achieve Universal Consciousness communion). Those who undertake service activities should overcome the sense of 'mine' and 'thine'; they should regard it as a privilege to serve others. They should consider service to society as the means of finding self-fulfilment in life. They should face whatever problems may arise, with faith and courage and carry on their service activities without fanfare, in a spirit of humility and dedication.

09/03 :
Man thinks that the more he has of worldly goods the happier he will be. But, as desires grow, disappointments and troubles also increase. There should be a limit to our desires, attachments and ambitions. The world is suffering from numerous troubles because people do not keep their desires under check. Nature has prescribed limits for everything - for the temperature of the body, the capacity of the eye to tolerate light or for the ear to listen to sound. When these limits are crossed, harm is caused to the organs concerned. All actions in life should be governed by the limits applicable to each of them. When desires are controlled, genuine happiness is experienced.

10/03 :
Love is inherent in man, but like a seed that has to be nourished by water, love in man has to be fostered by dedicated service. Love is a sacred quality. Love is like nectar. Life must be a constant manifestation of love. Nowadays, love is expressed in a constricted, selfish manner. It needs to be expressed in the form of service to society. Thereby love becomes a reciprocal, ever-widening experience.

11/03 :
Realize that human happiness is not to be found in sensory objects or experiences. Whatever pleasure is derived from these is transient and momentary. Real and enduring bliss is to be derived from within oneself. The senses should be regarded as instruments for rendering service to others. The foolish idea that happiness lies only in indulging in sensual pleasures should be given up. Only animals are content to derive satisfaction from the senses alone. Hence, every man should firmly declare, "I am a man and not an animal." Only when he has this firm conviction will man shed his animal nature and assert his humanness. Therefore, it is only when the senses are brought under control that the nature of Divinity can be comprehended.

12/03:
Man needs a healthy body in order to have a healthy mind filled with good thoughts. It must be recognised that the purpose of sports and music is to confer health and happiness on man. There are three benefits to be derived from sports and games: team spirit, mutual understanding and joy. Even if men speak different languages and differ in their habits and cultures, in the field of sports they have a common bond, a spirit of camaraderie. True education consists in the cultivation of good thoughts and acquisition of good qualities like truthfulness, devotion, discipline, and dedication. These are also the qualities that should be acquired through sports and games. These qualities serve to impart to the subtle body health and joy.

13/03 :
In rendering selfless service, one should not think that their services should be confined to the poor and the destitute. There is no need to make any artificial distinction between the rich and the poor in the sphere of service. What matters is the service done to a person who needs it. Your concern should only be with what kind of service is required, when and where, and not the status or position of the person concerned. The primary requisite is a genuine spirit of love and fellow-feeling. If there is no feeling of kindness and compassion, whatever service that is done becomes an artificial exercise, done for getting publicity or recognition. Ostentation in rendering service is harmful as it will only inflate the ego.

14/03 :
Without Cosmic Consciousness, there is no universe. To ask for physical proof of the existence of bliss or love or the fragrance of a flower is impracticable. To deny the reality of love on the ground that it has no recognizable form is meaningless. Love may have no form, but the mother who exhibits love has a form. All beings are manifestations of the Cosmic Consciousness. The forms are different, but the spirit that animates them all is One, like the current that illumines bulbs of different colours and wattage. Cultivate this feeling of oneness and do not be critical of any faith or religion. Dedicate your lives to the service of your fellow beings. Thereby, you will be redeeming your lives.

15/03 :
Men should lead selfless lives. This may seem difficult. But, in reality, there is nothing easier than this. It is selfishness that creates all kinds of difficulties for man. Selfless love gives no room for any evil. Selfless love may meet with opposition from one's kith and kin and from worldly persons. But one should not be deterred by such opposition. Love should be cherished as one's life breath. Make love the basis for all your actions.

16/03:
Where is righteousness? It is in your conduct, thoughts, words and deeds. Righteousness dwells in your heart. When the impulses arising from the heart are expressed in words, that is “Truth”. To translate those words into action is “Righteousness”. For all these, Love is the primary requisite. Love in action is righteousness. Love in speech is Truth. Love in thought is Peace. Love in understanding is Non-violence.

17/03:
The mind must become the servant of the intellect, not the slave of the senses. It must discriminate and detach itself from the body. Like the ripe tamarind fruit, which becomes loose inside the shell, it must be unattached to this shell or casement which is the body. Strike a green tamarind fruit with a stone and you cause harm to the pulp inside. But do this to a ripe fruit and what happens? It is the dry rind that falls off, nothing affects the pulp or the seed. The ripe aspirant does not feel the blow of fate or fortune. It is the unripe man, who is wounded by every blow. So too, your ignorance must fall off through your own efforts. It will not come to you as a gift or miracle. Truth, Bliss and Peace that is won by your own struggle with untruth and injustice will be the lasting treasure for you.

18/03:
The frog caught and held in the mouth of a cobra, unaware of its fate, flicks at the snake’s tongue as if it were a fly to eat. So too, you seek joy and earn pain, hunt for pleasure and bag grief. You attach yourself to the body that decays, and let go of God. Thousands of wise men have advised about this a million times. However their words have not fallen on the soft soil of the heart and have not been watered by the tears of contrition. From now on, let your heart with clean consciousness, be a lamp. Pour into it the oil of chanting of the Divine Name. Place the wick of Self-Control and keep it in position, so that the gusts of joy and grief do not scotch the flame. Light it with noble thoughts. Then, you will not only have Light, but also become a source of Light.

19/03:
Inner cleanliness should be your first aim. You may have fine vegetables, excellent spices, salt and the best of pulses; the cook may be a master of the art. The oven you use may be the best one can get. But if the copper vessel used for cooking is not tinned, the soup will turn into something dangerous; that which cannot be consumed. The dish prepared becomes poisonous if the interior of the vessel is unfit for cooking. So too, you must cleanse your inner being. Virtuous deeds and good habits along with prayers act as lining for the vessel of your heart, where emotions, impulses and instincts are cooking. Prayer will tame all the instincts like a wild elephant is trained to perform tricks in a circus ring.

20/03:
Both the form and the nature of the Cosmic Consciousness is such that it is unaffected and uninfluenced by anything that is ephemeral. The soul has no birth or death, hunger or thirst, grief or delusion! Birth and death are characteristics of the body; grief and delusion are afflictions of the mind. Do not assign any status to these; know yourself as the Cosmic Consciousness, the Self. Give up all delusion and become unattached. Do not be like the porous blotting paper that gets tainted with whatever it comes in contact with. Be the lotus leaf in the marshy lake of this worldly existence; do not get smeared with the mud around you. Be in the world, yet outside it.

21/03:
The wise one is ever happy and this happiness does not depend on objects outside. You may wonder how; it is because such people are content with whatever happens to them, well or ill, as they are convinced that the Lord's will must prevail. Want of this contentment is a sign of an unwise person. These persons pile one wish on another, builds one plan after another and pines perpetually; he or she worries and sets one’s own heart ablaze with greed. On the other hand, the wise is unshaken, steady and ever jubilant! The wise may be engaged in actions but they are not affected in the least by it, as they have no eye on the fruit of their actions.

22/03:
Karma as such has no capacity to bind; it is the conceit, 'I am the doer' that brings about the attachment and the bondage. Again, it is the desire for the fruit of action that produces the bondage. For example: the zero gets value only when in association with a digit. Karma is zero; the feeling of 'doership' when associated with Karma breeds bondage. So give up the sense of ‘I’ and the Karma that you do will never harm you. Karma done without any desire for the fruits thereof will not produce impulses; that is to say, there will be no impulse for birth even. The spiritual aspirants of the past performed Karma with this high ideal in view. They never felt that they were the ‘doers’ or ‘enjoyers of the fruits’ of any act. You too should cultivate that faith.

23/03 :
The most important reason for bondage is giving too much freedom to the mind. When an animal is tethered to a post, it will not be able to go elsewhere. It cannot show anger or violence or do harm to any person. But if it is let loose, it can roam around, destroy crops and cause loss and harm to others. In the process it may get beaten for the mischief done. Similarly, the mind must be bound by certain regulations and limits. As long as man lives within certain rules and disciplines, he will be able to maintain a good name and lead a happy and useful life. Once he crosses these limits he will go astray.

24/03:
The Universal Soul is inherently devoid of attachment. It has no awareness of its own needs or nature of its possessions. It has no 'I' or 'mine' for these are the marks of Illusion. Only those afflicted with illusion will suffer from the ego or the sense of 'mine'. Though it may appear to ordinary eyes that ‘I am the doer’, the truth is ‘I am a non-doer’! Not only this, the effect of action (karma) does not cease as soon as it is finished. Karma yields fruits; the results of Karma breed desire for them; and that in turn results in impulses for further Karma. These impulses bring about further births. Thus Karma can lead to the cycle of births and deaths; it is a vicious whirlpool, making you revolve round and round, and finally dragging you down into the depths. So do not put your faith on this world and the objects of the world. Cultivate and practice detachment!

25/03 :
There are no permanent mothers in the world, the only permanent mother is the Divine Mother. You must always remind yourself that you are part of a spiritual family. Truth is your father, Love is your mother, Wisdom is your son, Peace is your daughter, Devotion is your brother, and Yogis are your friends. These are your true relatives who will always accompany you and be with you. When you have this kind of relationship, when you treasure such friendship, you will be able to break the bonds of the world and be free. Think of Divinity every minute of your life. Light has value only when there is darkness; it has no value by itself. In times of trouble and sorrow, whenever problems arise, evoke the principle of Divinity. It will certainly shed illumination and light in moments of darkness and bring joy to you.

26/03 :
If there is a boil on the body, we apply some ointment and cover it with a bandage until it heals. If you do not do this, it is likely to become septic and cause great harm later on. Now and then one has to clean it with pure water, apply the ointment again and put on a new bandage. In the same way in our life, there is this particular boil which has come up in our body, in the form of 'I'. If you want to really cure this boil of 'I', you will have to wash it every day with the waters of love, apply the ointment of faith and tie the bandage of humility around it. This will cure the disease that has erupted with this boil of 'I'.

27/03:
The Lord, like a lump of sugar, is sweetness all over. All differences and distinctions are the illusions of people with body consciousness. Consider this example: A mother having four children does not give the other three as much attention and care as she gives to the child in the cradle. Even if the child does not call out for it, she is ever vigilant to give it food. The other three come and ask her for food and things to play with. Observing this, you cannot pronounce her a bad mother or a partial mother. The mother adjusts her activities to the capacity and ability of the child. So too, though the entire world is His, though all are His children, He graces and blesses each one according to one’s capacity and ability. To ascribe any fault to such selfless, sincere, simple, ever-blissful Providence is like attributing darkness to the Sun - it is an act of sheer ignorance!

28/03 :
Life is a tree of delusion, with all its branches, leaves and flowers of illusion. You can realize this, when all your acts are dedicated offerings to the Universal Consciousness. See Her as the sap that runs through every cell; the Sun that is warming and building each atom. See Her in all and worship Her through all, for She is all. Engage in activity, filling it with devotion. It is devotion that sanctifies. A piece of paper is almost a trash, but if the contents of a certificate are written on it, you value and treasure it; it becomes a passport for promotion in life. Hence it is the feelings behind an act that matters, and not outward pomp and show. Without knowing this secret of transforming every action into an act of worship, people suffer from disappointment and grief. In sacred places of worship, stones of little value are shaped as Divine forms or idols. But when the feeling of devotion transmutes the idol, it becomes the highest treasure for the human mind.

29/03 :
The most important cause for bondage to the world is giving too much freedom to the mind. For example, when an animal is tethered to a post, it will not be able to roam over various fields, destroy the crops and cause loss and harm to others, and thereafter get beaten for the mischief done by it. Hence, the mind must be bound by certain regulations and limits. As long as man lives a disciplined life, bound by certain rules and regulations, he will be able to earn a good reputation and lead a happy and fruitful life. Once he crosses these limits he will go astray.

30/03 :
Just close your eyes for five minutes and think of the profit your efforts have won for you. One wish always leads to another and this goes on like a never ending chain. Initially, you wish to marry, then you get a daughter or a son, after this you desire to finish their education, marriage and the list goes on and on. The joy one gets by fulfilment of any desire is imperfect, limited, temporary and pregnant with grief. The secret to true happiness lies in detachment. The tongue has oil, fat and greasy substances rolling over it, but it is unaffected by these and does not become greasy. The mind too must be tamed to be unaffected by the experience of success and failure, gain and loss, well-being and illness. Practice surrendering at the feet of the Universal Consciousness at all times; let Her will prevail.

31/03:
Resolve to master the senses through meditation and follow it steadily, systematically and regularly, at a stated time and place, without changing them as the whim takes you. Do not alter as fancy dictates for that will bring about dire consequences. For those who eat too much and get exhausted with the task of assimilating it, those who eat less and suffer from exhaustion, those who sleep too much or too little, those who indulge in spiritual practices according to 'convenience' (that is to say, who do it for long hours one day because they have no other work, but do token meditation the next day, because they have lots of engagements), those who give free rein to the six inner enemies, those who do not confer joy on parents, and those who have little faith in the Lord installed in their hearts – for all these people spiritual practices will yield no fruit at all.

Thought for the day

ycoeur17.gif
